PUPILS from three secondary schools designed a model racing car and raced it at a scaled speed equivalent to more than 200mph.

Teams of 14-year-olds from Ysgol Botwnnog near Pwllheli, Ysgol Morgan Llwyd, Wrexham, and Welshpool High School were among the 35 student teams competing in the F1 in Schools Technology Challenge National Finals at the Autosport International show in Birmingham.

All had designed a gas-powered balsa wood car capable of scale speeds of up to 220mph.

The climax of the competition, in which schools from all regions of Britain competed for the prestigious F1 in Schools trophy, featured an intense day of presentations and judging as well as the time trial.

Racing on a specially-designed 20-metre track, the F1 models are fired off, powered by a carbon dioxide gas cylinder.

With the national record standing at just over a second, every millisecond counts.

None of the North Wales schools featured on the podium but all involved enjoyed the experience.
